If Borat were to lay eyes on this magnificent Fender 30th Anniversary Custom Shop 50s Telecaster, he would undoubtedly say, "WA WA WE WA!" This particular guitar is rare, being one of only four (!) ever made. Finished in a faded shell pink colour with double ‘parchment’ binding, it debuted at the NAMM show in 2017 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Custom Shop, and was sold by dealer ballot. The guitar has a short, known history from new, and it is highly likely that this beauty is the only one of its kind in the entire land of OZ. Let me tell you, this guitar is an absolute beast. It is easily one of the best telecasters I have ever had the pleasure of playing.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Custom Shop in 2017, Fender brought back their original Custom Shop builders to infuse their artisanal touch onto some traditional Fender models. The result was some truly unique guitars, with this NAMM special being no exception.
This ’52-inspired Telecaster boasts a left-handed Nocaster bridge, and a Strat-style neck pickup (pickups are both hand-wound Texas Specials), giving it a unique and versatile sound. The 9.5” radius, 10/56 “V” neck provides spectacular playability, with the reversed control plate adding a surprisingly practical pickup-switching experience to an already great playing one. Not only is it a joy to play, but it is also incredibly lightweight, tipping the scales at a mere 3.1kg (approximately).
And let's not forget about its stunning appearance. The super sexy faded shell pink finish has been expertly aged to what Fender call a “Journeyman” relic, and the double binding adds an extra touch of elegance. And the neck... It is a sight to behold. The flame running through it is simply glorious, and the aging process gives it that authentic vintage Fender feel. You can't help but appreciate the craftsmanship that went into creating this masterpiece. It is a truly delightful addition to an already exceptional guitar.
The guitar currently wears a black pickguard, aged white pickup cover and compensated saddles, though the original aged units are all in the guitar’s OG tweed/red velvet Custom Shop case – along with the rest of the case candy (COA, shop floor traveller, hang tags, dealer card from NAMM etc.).
