Masterbuilt by Yuriy Shishkov – Time Machine Series
Here is a particularly special instrument. Not only is this a Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt guitar, it is also part of Fender’s renowned Time Machine Series, widely regarded as producing some of the finest vintage-style Fender guitars ever made. To top it all off, this example has been crafted by one of Fender’s most celebrated Masterbuilders — Yuriy Shishkov.
Masterbuilt Fender guitars are rarely seen in Australia, and while we’ve been fortunate enough to have a few pass through the shop over the past year, this one truly stands out.
This is a Heavy Relic ’60s Stratocaster in Surf Green, built entirely by Yuriy Shishkov. Originally from Moscow, Shishkov trained as a fine artist and engraver before immigrating to the United States in the early 1990s. He joined the Fender Custom Shop in 2000 and was promoted to Masterbuilder in 2004, a title reserved for Fender’s most elite luthiers who craft instruments completely by hand from start to finish. His work is widely regarded as some of the most distinctive and collectible within the Fender Custom Shop.
In terms of feel and tone, this guitar delivers exactly what you would hope for from a Masterbuilt Stratocaster. It is extremely lightweight, highly resonant, and exceptionally responsive. Every time you pick up a Masterbuilt instrument it becomes clear why they command such respect — the quality of the materials and craftsmanship is simply on another level.
The tonewoods used in this build are outstanding. It features a beautifully dark slab of Indian rosewood, paired with a gorgeous maple neck carved to a comfortable ’60s profile. The body is a two-piece basswood construction, producing a lively and articulate acoustic response.
Electronics include Fender Custom Shop Fat ’50s pickups, paired with a Custom Shop ’69-spec bridge pickup, delivering classic Stratocaster tones with excellent clarity, warmth, and bite.
The guitar is presented in excellent condition and comes complete with its original Fender Custom Shop case, along with all certificates and accompanying paperwork.
